I’ve noticed that many people everyone positively sings Happy Friday! at the end of every week. In comparison, Mondays seem to be the black sheep of the work week. But what if more of us could use the L word when talking about work? Could you imagine what that might be like? Everyone would be like “Happy Tuesday!” and “Happy Wednesday!” and maybe even “Oh no! It’s Thursday! It’s almost the end of the week! :(“
Not to be that annoying, overly chipper morning person (because believe me, that is not me at all) but just thought I’d share this quote Nathalie sent me. Hope it gets your juices flowing for the week ahead. I know it made me want to become a computer genius named Steve.
“I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet. Keep looking. Don’t settle.” — Steve Jobs, Stanford Commencement Speech 2005
Now THAT is why I want to be a psychiatrist.
I honestly don't think I'll be able to become one because I don't have enough money to study and become one T^T But I am DETERMINED NO MATTER HOW POOR I AM, and hopefully, by being a nurse first, I can get some money to get into school to become a psychiatrist.
No matter what I end up doing, I'm going to love it, even if it pays enough for an apartment rent. >:0
Preach! I'm still trying to figure out the "job" where I'm paid … something, anything … to read novels, go to the gym, and surf the internet and blog all day. All suggestions welcomed.
Kim, throw in "doing some with fashion, watching reality TV and/or Food Network and hiking" to your dream job and that would be my dream job. haha. I, too, need to figure that one out!
Kyrie, I think there is lots of money out there in terms of grants and scholarships for people pursuing their PhD. You should do it! Oh, but psychiatrists have to go to med school, huh…
Great advice! I loved being a stay at home mom, but now I work. Should I quit?
Hi Sobrina,
just a quick hello. I had a great Monday, still on holiday here in Rome, I am a teacher= 2 months holidays. I spent all day trying to fight the dust, and just wrote my post about dust in literature and art! Inspired by the day.
I saw the photos of Alan on the benches in front of the lake. It's a very beautiful landscape. I hope you both get energy from the lake and the family. All the best, and good night!
Giovanna 🙂
I just had a conversation with someone about the use of the phrase "Happy Friday." While she finds it (and those who use it) highly annoying, I find it to be quite a useful phrase indeed. Perfect for reminding your co-workers that the weekend is coming, yet still neutral enough so that your boss doesn't catch on that you really hate your job.
I'm a preschool teacher and I love love love my job! But, I have B.A.'s in psychology and anthropology. Occasionally, people will rudely ask why I even bothered with the degrees or why I don't get a 'real job' that uses my degrees. I've had a few 'real jobs' where I did technically use my degrees and I hated them. Life is so much better when you love what you do and feel like you're helping out in some small way, even if I do get paid in sunshine and rainbows (and kisses and hugs and hand holds and crayon drawings and…).
The key to life or a job isn't finding what you love but loving what you've got.
If you choose to complain about the one you have, then why would the universe give you anything else?
Hypothetical of course.
I agree. I have always loved mondays and all the potential that comes with a new week.I will take any day and be happy with it.
While it would be wonderful if we could all love our jobs, some people have to do things *I* (and many of us) don't want to do…and many of those things it'd be hard to love.
I was a garbage man for awhile…its not a great job, its not a fun job, its just a job. I knew no one that loved it. I'm greatful someone hauls off my trash every week though. Convience store clerk has its moments, but nobody loves it…there's a large list of things that have to get done, and few people love doing it…and the world would be a dirtier place without them.
Wow, what a great sampling of insights into this topic! I think finding what is right for you to do as a career can make all the difference. It can make the difference between waking up dreading what you're going to do all day, or looking forward to it. I wish the latter for everyone.
I completely agree, Sobrina. We spend so many hours of our week at work. If we can't learn to appreciate what we are doing during our weekdays, we make so much of our life miserable.
Actually, I wrote a similar post to this one a week or two ago. Give it a read if you'd like :.)

Hi Giovanna, I've always envied the summer breaks teachers get! I hope you're having a great holiday! (I love that you call it a holiday!)
LOL Karin!
Constance, that is awesome. I love hearing from people who LOVE their jobs! Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike my job at all, but LOVE! What a big word and I'm glad you found it for yourself 🙂
Adam, LOVE for Monday's! I'm going to try to be more like you!
i love this post. makes me think about the things that i really really love to do, but just couldn't find the job for that. hehe. one sure sign that yo love your job: if yo whistle while going to work. and it is true, well, according to my friends. 🙂
I agree with Steve; all the great Christian mystics say Work is Love. I see it in my mother's small attention to detail that makes our home life work – it's pure love for home 'work'…
I am right there with you Shaista. What's wrong with dreaming a little dream and loving what you do?
