Hello!

I'm back! Hong Kong and Cambodia were loads of fun. I have so many adventures and pictures to share! My computer/camera/photo transfer decided to crap out on me today, so stay tuned as I (hopefully) get all my pictures uploaded and sorted. I have so many things to blog about that I'm going to try and post everyday for the next week or two.

While it's been hard getting back into the swing of things, I was so excited to come home to these mini Le Creusets my friend got me as a house warming gift. They will be so perfect for my next batch of French onion soup -- thanks Preet!

Tartine Bread

When I first moved back to the Bay Area after living in L.A. for 6 years, my best friend Irene and I ventured all around San Francisco looking for a place for me to live. The first place we saw was the size of a shoebox. The girls that lived there were nice. Although I didn't end up living there, I will always remember them because they were the ones who first told me about Tartine. Ever since that day, I have been in love with this bakery. Everyone I've taken also falls in love. One other thing I love is this video about Tartine's bread. Chad Robertson, the owner, really digs bread which makes me feel more normal about my own bread and Tartine obsession.

Simple Breakfasts

-butter, blueberry jam, toast, coffee-

I love breakfast. On Saturday mornings it is one of my favorite rituals to think about what I really want to eat that morning (instead of the usual bowl of cereal I eat at work), and I've found that I often crave very simple foods for breakfast. When I want to feel like I've been whisked away to Paris, I'll fix myself some hearty toast using good bread with a nice pat of salted butter and thick blueberry jam. I could probably eat this every morning.

On days when I need a savory start, I'll go the traditional bacon and eggs route. When I was very young, I almost exclusively ate my eggs scrambled. As I grew older, I liked my eggs sunny side up. In my teens, I preferred them over-medium, and now that I'm in my twenties, I like them medium-boiled.

Some days I will eat breakfast according to a "dessert first" philosophy. I try not to have too many of these days, but sometimes, starting the morning with a cookie and some Fage is just too good.

And always, always, even if not pictured, coffee must be had with every breakfast. It is only right.

Content Magazine's Stinky Cheese Party

On New Year's, Content Magazine threw an amazing stinky cheese party where every guest was forced out of their cheese comfort zones by tasting 4 stinky cheeses. There was so much sparkling conversation and people laughing uncontrollably after eating the worst of the cheeses -- it was so much fun! I even got to style the event :) Check out the post on Content for more pictures and to read the article where I share what it was like eating notes of barnyard and body odor.

Gone Adventuring!

Today my 4 cousins (Nathalie, Denise, Justin, and Eric) and I are headed off on our trip to Hong Kong, Cambodia and Thailand. When we first booked our tickets it felt like this adventure would never get here, but here it finally is! It took me forever to finish packing, and aside from all the gifts, malaria meds, and wet naps I'm bringing, I ended up packing really light on the clothes front. For the next three weeks, I plan on wearing lots of simple cotton tanks, long cut-offs, and this retro-looking bathing suit I picked up from Target. I also went a little crazy at the Victoria's Secret semi-annual sale, but at least I'll have lots of clean undies for the entire trip!

I hope everyone has a wonderful January. I'll be back on the 31st with lots of fun pictures and stories to share from my trip. Until then, I've scheduled a few "to eat" posts for the next three Mondays, so check back if you'd like :)

Awesome CV

William Burks Spencer's CV is one of the raddest I've ever seen. The nerd in me is really enjoying the x- and y-axis element, while the copywriter in me is digging the cheekiness of his work.

I am totally procrastinating on doing laundry (but the laundry room is dark and cold and has bugs and can you blame me?) and packing for Friday, but I didn't really do a "to see" post today and it is Wednesday after all, so hope you enjoyed it :) Off to add more quarters to the dryer which dries in sad 20 minute intervals.

Almost adventure time

Chicken Little Dumplings

Our trip to Asia is just a few days away, and not to sound like a broken record, but I absolutely cannot wait for this 3-week break. I plan on reading a giant stack of magazines on the long plane ride, eating lots of the free peanuts (or maybe they will have better goodies than that?), reading non-serious books on the beach, not getting eaten by mosquitoes, and taking lots of pictures of the place where my parents grew up.

Our first stop is Hong Kong where we'll be visiting Hong Kong Disney and our friend Matt. Almost as excited as I am to see him thousands of miles away from home, I am almost equally as excited to eat cute Asian Disneyland foods, like these Chicken Little dumplings!

Peppermint + White Mocha + Espresso

This weekend was absolute madness. We moved into our new apartment, went to the Content stinky cheese party, and ran around trying to get odds and ends taken care of before I leave for Asia on Friday. There are so many things to think about before leaving, like the fact that the new place has windows--lots and lots of windows. Having all these windows everywhere suddenly makes us realize how much we like to walk around half-dressed and how badly we need to put up curtains (to keep from scaring all the neighbors). But I don't want just any curtains, and a part of me wants to have curtains made while I'm in Cambodia. Which means I'll need fabric, which means I'll need to find time somewhere in the next 4 days to find some...

Luckily, amidst all the craziness of the past few weeks, I've had a secret weapon which has helped me stay sane: the peppermint white mocha. It's a completely over-the-top beverage, but I love how it's seasonal and how it reminds me that, like most everything else (crazy busy schedules included), it'll only last for so long.
