Snapshots: The last week of April

heart balloon in the sky
Where, oh where, does the time go? Can you believe it's almost May? This last week was a good one to close the month on. Not because of any particular reason, but maybe just because each day felt nice and full and well-lived. While on a hike this weekend, we saw this heart floating around in the big blue sky. It looked so sweet and yet out of place—it totally reminded me of this.

spicy tuna on crispy rice
For date night this week we tried a new sushi restaurant. My favorite dish was the spicy tuna on crispy rice. YUM.

Friday Flicks: We The Tiny House People

The Tiny House Movement has been around for years, but when I first heard about it, it blew my mind. I always feel like we never have enough room, so to see people making do with just 400-600 sq. ft. of living space is really impressive (and makes our regular-sized 1 bedroom apartment feel like a sprawling mansion). A new documentary called We the Tiny House People: Small Houses, Tiny Flats and Wee Shelters was just released this week and offers a glimpse into these fascinating homes and the people who live in them. You can watch the whole thing on YouTube or the trailer here. I can't wait to watch it this weekend.

Office Talk: The war on lunchroom terror

ladies lunching
sandwich combinations
Something I always thought was really funny is how wild and ruthless office lunchrooms can be. Alan usually brings his lunch, but he recently told me about this one day when he went out and got a big meatball sub. He ate half of it, wrote his name on the other half, and stashed it in the fridge. When he went to eat the other half the next day... it was gone! He didn't even use a knife to neatly slice it in half either, so someone totally ate his sandwich with bite marks all over it.

The funny/scary thing is that I hear stories like this all the time. When I worked in L.A., my friend Tiffany left her Jamba Juice in the cafeteria freezer with a clean straw poking out of the top. When she came back to get it, someone had already taken a sip! Another time, someone told me he had been heating up a frozen burrito when he left for a few minutes to go check his email. When he came back, he found his burrito with a huge bite taken out of the corner. It makes me laugh just thinking about what that must be like to come back and find your burrito all amiss. (Wouldn't it make you want to look around for hidden cameras?)

It also begs the question: who are these people?? Every time I tell this story, everyone agrees, Yes, who are these people? So no one's owning up to it, but there has to be someone out there stealthily eating all these burritos and subs and washing it all down with fruit smoothies. When I meet that person, I'll have to ask, What would you do if you got caught?

My adventure drawer

yellow table
Do you ever wonder what's inside the drawers and cupboards when you're at someone else's house? I'm totally that person. Just for fun, and in case you're the same way, here's a peek at the drawer contents of the tiny table by our door where we throw our keys and stash our mail.

drawer contents
I keep business cards of faraway places I hope to visit one day (like Laduree!) and pictures of places I've been to and remember fondly.

adventure drawer
I call it my adventure drawer because of my postcard collection which is great for mentally transporting to an exciting place on a rainy day. Reading the notes on the backs always makes me laugh. (The postcard on the right of that amazing wave is half written on because my friend's hand was "wet and slippery from just having played in the warm water." Punk.)

mini comics
fortune
And there are mini comics, too, and other odds and ends, like my favorite fortunes (which I'm still waiting on, ha ha).

kaleidoscope view
My favorite is a kaleidoscope given to me by an old boss. I've always thought they were so magical.

Lacey

This warm weather lately makes me want to eat outside and go for long strolls afterwards. Wouldn't these lace tops be perfect for doing just that?

How did you spend your 21st birthday?

guinness beer and glasses
bourbon and branch
My sister Sophie is turning 21 next month! I'm going up to Portland to help her celebrate. She has lots of fun places she wants to visit on her bar-hopping list, so I'll have to resist the urge to call my dad at midnight to come pick me up when I get sleepy, ha ha. I did some quick research on her list to make sure I could hang, and it actually looks much tamer than I thought it'd be.

Bits + Bobs

tokketok happy notes

How was your weekend? Mine flew by. We spent all day Sunday battling our new Ikea bed, but we finally put it all together. (I wonder if anyone is really good at following Ikea's illustrated directions or if it's normal to have to re-do entire steps because you didn't notice the first time that the board with the two tiny extra holes in the middle goes in the front and not the back of the bed.) Aside from the joy of finishing an Ikea project, here are a few other things making me happy.

{best afternoon snack: an extra-large pistachio macaron from Cocola}

fresh apple orange kale juice
{fresh apple/orange/kale/asparagus juice which tasted ultra refreshing (you couldn't even taste the veggies!) from my co-worker's top-of-the-line juicer}

Weekend Plans: Bar Tartine

bar tartine blood sausage
bar tartine
bar tartine
bar tartine bread
bar tartine langos
It's supposed to be amazingly warm in San Francisco this weekend (I just checked my iPhone weather app—it's going to be 79 degrees! Crazy!) which is perfect since I'll be up there visiting my friend Jennifer. We're going to have brunch at Bar Tartine which is owned by the same people who own Tartine bakery—the place I take all my loved ones to when they come to visit. Everyone from Bon Appetit to Elle to GQ loves them some Tartine. The food is Nordic/Hungarian and it seems like the things to get are the housemade blood sausage, the fried potato bread with dill and sour cream, and the smorrebrod, a Danish open-faced sandwich served on a dense sourdough sprouted rye. Now all I have to do between now and then is decide on what to get...or order one of each and convince Jennifer to share everything with me, ha!

I hope you have a wonderful, food-filled weekend. :)

Boyfriend Jeans

boyfriend jeans with yellow heels
For the past few years my closet's been full of skinny jeans, but I'm really starting to like the relaxed look of boyfriend jeans. I think they make girls look cool and confident. I just ordered this pair and can't wait to wear them around. They're super cute rolled up with heels for the office...

Gift Wrapping Details

heart shaped cards

Target is one of those places that gets me every time. I always think I'll just "run in and pick up some toothpaste," but then I'll get sidetracked by something bright and shiny in another part of the store and spend an entire hour there. How does that always happen? Does it happen to you? Last time I was there to buy toothpaste, I spent most of my time looking at all the adorable stationery and paper goods. (p.s. When did Target turn into a more affordable Paper Source?) The Mara-Mi and Spritz lines had so many cute things for gift wrapping and note-making I couldn't help but stock up.

DIY Painted Rhinestone Necklace

DIY Painted Rhinestone Necklace
I love rhinestone necklaces (as seen here and here and all over my accessories Pinterest board) so this DIY painted necklace got my attention right away. It'd be a really fun and easy project--all you do is paint select rhinestones with different colored nail polishes. Surprisingly, her necklace is from Forever 21. I can never seem to find anything so pretty for a bargain, but if I did, I'd be tempted to paint mine orange and pink. Would you try it?

Confetti Sheets

Whenever friends come over, I straighten up the living room, give the kitchen and bathroom a quick once-over, and then I close our bedroom door. Not that we have any exciting secrets squirreled away back there. Mostly it's because our bedroom looks sad and undone. When I moved back to the Bay, I left my bed frame in L.A. and said I would get a new one after I got settled in here. That was five years ago. Five! We've been sleeping on our mattress on the floor now for as long as I can remember. It started to seem like we'd be sleeping on the ground for another five years if I didn't do something about it soon, so a bedroom makeover is now one of my new projects. While searching for new bedding, I found these colorful confetti sheets. They're sold out of our size sheets, but I can't stop thinking about them. Wouldn't it be fun to wake up to a party in your bed every morning?

Girl Crush: Karena + Katrina of Tone It Up

Remember when I talked about my gym aversion? I wasn't kidding—I don't even remember the last time I was in a gym. But if there is exercise that can be done from the convenience of my living room, I'm all for it. Lately I've been reading Tone It Up, founded by Karena and Katrina, and doing a bunch of their exercise routines. I think it's important to find "trainers" whom you find motivating and personable, and I love them!

First of all, they're total beach babes who remind you how important it is to exercise and eat right (at least if you want to have abs like that—hot dang!), and secondly, it's so cute that they're best friends who live by the beach with mermaid hair. They kind of ooze fun—right now they're in Puerto Rico for a shoot and they just wrapped another in Hawaii. They also provide tons of great, free resources like printable workoutsvideos to show you exactly how to do the printable workouts, and—my new favorite—a full-length workout DVD.

Weekend Snapshots

After a week of rain and gloomy skies, this weekend turned out to be sunny and gorgeous. We went hiking at Rancho San Antonio and saw all the new babes at the farm. There were baby goats and this sweet little lamb. (Is it weird that he reminds me of these guys?)

And here are a few other snapshots from the weekend...
