The Saddest White Elephant

j.crew grey and turquoise necklace
I really scored at my family's white elephant with this pretty necklace, and all it took was one strategic steal. Everyone else, however, was not so lucky. Normally when we play, people hide their gifts under jackets to avoid having them stolen, but this year's game turned into a pitiful open air market. You couldn't make it through your turn without hearing everyone hawk their goods. As more gifts were unwrapped, and the sad inventory was assessed, statements like "you know you want this puzzle" and "check out these socks—they're not even used" became more and more appealing. A few winners went home with a bottle of bacon-flavored syrup (re-gifted from last year's game) and a dusted-off, decade-old museum book from the garage. We were all ready to write it off as an off-year—not every white elephant can be as good as the last, right?—but then a packet of MSG was unwrapped and that's when we knew: next year, there would be guidelines.

Madewell Slouchy Pants

madewell slouchy pants
My Madewell slouchy pants finally arrived—they've been backordered since September! I shared a few ways to wear them a couple months ago (below) and thought it'd be fun to do an update on how I styled them in real life. For all the girls out there who don't like wearing real pants as much as I do, they're even more comfortable than I imagined!

p.s. A friend and I were just lamenting about the fancy shirts in our closet and how we never wear them because we're afraid to ruin them. This nude Equipment blouse is mine! I was about to head out the door wearing it, but then I remembered I had a meeting later that day where I'd probably be talking a lot (and getting sweaty), and we'd be having Thai food for lunch (which I'd probably spill down the front). So I went with the outfit on the left. Oh, the curse of the fancy shirts!

Foodie Gift Idea: Pizza Tour

pizza tour gift idea
I was trying to think of a thoughtful Christmas gift for my food-loving friend, when I came up with a fun idea: a pizza tour! Since he loves pizza, I picked up gift cards for three pizzerias in his neighborhood that would be fun to try. One is for Pizz'a Chicago, Chicago-style deep dish pizza, the second is for Amici's, thin-crust East Coast pizza, and the third is for Pizza Bocca Lupo, Neapolitan-style pizza. (Fun fact: I interviewed the Pizza Bocca Lupo owner when he first opened up shop!)

fun ways to give gift cards
A fun way to gift a food tour is to package all the gift cards in a single box. Stencil or paint the name of the tour on top. Then tape a piece of string to the inside of the gift box lid and tape the gift cards and notes (think insider tips like "get the breadsticks!") along the string.

how to give gift cards
As the box opens, the notes and gift cards get pulled out one at a time.

creative gift packaging
You could make all kinds of tours to match your friends' tastes. Coffee tours, cupcake tours and burger tours are just a few more delicious ones that come to mind. It'd be a great way to explore new restaurants, don't you think? I love the idea of gifting friends with an experience they can look forward to over multiple occasions :)

Plaid + Stripes

striped dress for fall
plaid and stripes
Happy Thursday! I wanted to share two things. First, my search for a striped dress for fall has finally come to an end. It's been hard finding one made of substantial cotton with an easy fit. This striped dress from Anthropologie can be worn with tights and big sweaters now and then with sandles in the spring. Second, I'm staying at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley (which has the prettiest views) for a meeting, and the walls are paper thin. This morning, I heard my neighbor's phone vibrate, ha!

Lumberjack Party

When it comes to parties, I love ones with a good theme. Case in point: my friend's surprise lumberjack party this weekend!

Everyone wore their finest trappings.

And then we had a wood-chopping contest! Just kidding. But we really should have, so we could have made a great big fire because it's been so cold lately.

My beard came in nicely, except I kept getting honey mustard pretzel crumbs in it.

Our friend Ali made this amazing gigantic s'more cake.

All the clever signs were painted by our friend Andrew. It was so fun! I wish every day could be a theme party.

What I Like About Writing

pink striped dress
In the interview for my current job, they asked, "What do you like about writing?" I said "the style of it," but I wasn't very good at describing what I meant. I've been thinking about it ever since, and then one day, I was reading Murakami's 1Q84 when it clicked. In the book, he describes the main character's writing process:

"...he did another careful read-through of the text.... Again he deleted parts that seemed superfluous, fleshed out passages that felt underwritten, and revised sections until they fit more smoothly into the rest of the story. He selected his words with all the care of a craftsman choosing the perfect piece of tile to fill a narrow gap in a bathroom floor, inspecting the fit from every angle. Where the fit was less than perfect, he adjusted the shape. The slightest difference in nuance could bring the passage to life or kill it. ... Then he reread the revised text on the screen. Not bad, he told himself. Each sentence possessed the proper weight, which gave the whole thing a natural rhythm."

So that's it! Anyone can share an idea or story. But making your words sing and leap off the page? That takes style. :)

p.s. I love this quote by Aristotle that reminds us to keep doing what we do to be who we want to be.

I'm so excited it's officially the Christmas season! In my mind, it doesn't start until the day after Thanksgiving (yes, I'm talking to you, neighbors who put your Christmas tree up the day after Halloween ;). What are you looking forward to most this holiday?

Teadrops Giveaway

As someone who loves the idea of tea, I have drawers filled with lots of different kinds. But it all just sits there, looking pretty in their fancy tins, because the truth is, tea intimidates me. So I'm excited that my friend Sashee created Teadrops, a new all-in-one instant tea with a focus on using high-quality tea leaves. She says people no longer have to worry about "decoding the varieties of tea, investing in a tea strainer, familiarizing themselves with steep times, adding sugar or adding milk. If you can boil water, then you can enjoy an amazing cup of tea."

Teadrops has partnered with Quiet Like Horses to offer readers a complimentary package of eight cardamom spice black Teadrops in a lovely wooden box. To request yours, visit, leave your name and address, and mention Quiet Like Horses. (Supplies are limited, so request yours now!) And follow myteadrop on Instagram and Facebook to get the latest news and updates.

Sashee recommends enjoying these Teadrops with a bit of cream (I used almond milk)—so delicious.

Making loose leaf tea seems like too much work for a busy morning and dinky tea bags don't seem worth the effort. Teadrops are the perfect answer for an effortless cup of good tea. Will you try them? Let us know what you think!
