This weekend, I got my makeup done by the lovely Lisa Saminathen for our engagement shoot. She did an amazing job bringing my vision for a messy chignon and fresh-faced makeup to life. I loved it! My sister Sophie helped capture the transformation, from zero makeup to full-on glamour. Click through to see the dramatic before and after...

Initial Earrings

I hardly ever wear earrings, but I had to make an exception for these Bonnie Jonas initial studs. They're so dainty, and you can mix and match letters for fun. I ordered an x and an o :) They remind me of these Giles & Brother studs I wanted a while ago but for much less.

Engagement Photo Shoot

Alan and I are taking our engagement photos this weekend with our friend Daniel. I'm so excited! Getting ready for it has been so fun. I decided to get my hair and makeup done which feels like a real treat. We have a "fancy" look and a more casual look planned, along with some props. Photo shoots aren't usually Alan's thing, so he's been more than happy to let me style everything. But then this weekend, he chimed in, "I'll bring a third outfit—a fantasy outfit. You can be an elf. I'll be a dwarf." Ha! (Nerds.)

Birthday Bootcamp

Last weekend, I helped plan a birthday surprise for my cousin Nathalie. She's really into fitness and is prepping for an upcoming fitness show(!) Fitness competitors have intense diets and exercise plans, so we nixed the typical cake, drinks and heavy foods and threw her a birthday bootcamp! Here are some pictures from the day if you'd like to see...

Pretty Sports Bra

unit-y be nimble sports bra
Unit-Y activewear makes funky sports bras in bright colors. (Remember the last time we talked about boobs? I first blogged about Unit-Y sports bras here.) They keep making more awesome designs, like this one with an intricate strappy back. They're also really comfy and supportive. And they're on sale! This is the one I'm wearing, but I love this one too.

Hair Week Challenge

easy braided hair ideas
Last week, Sophie and I did a hair challenge: we wore five different 'dos over five days. Here's how it went...

Striped Maxi Dress

I used to shy away from wearing maxi dresses because I thought only tall girls could pull them off. So not true! I first noticed when my friend Jennifer (who's a few inches shorter than me) wore one to lunch one day. She was rocking her baby bump and looked gorgeous. So I decided to give them a try, and now I'm in love. Their length automatically makes you look long and chic, and they're so comfy! This one has a thick, drapey fabric that I think would look good on just about anyone. And the contrasting stripes are a fun detail.

{I'm wearing an Everleigh multi stripe short sleeve maxi dress, BC Footwear Swagger Sandals and an Anthropologie necklace.}

Hair Week Challenge!

hair week challenge: wear a new 'do each day this week
Most days, I wear my hair down for work because I can style it in under 10 minutes. Lately, though, I've been inspired to try new 'dos to mix things up. So just for fun, Sophie and I are doing a hair challenge: We're going to wear a different hairdo to work each day this week! I'm hopeless with hair so we'll see how I do, but I'm excited to find hairstyles that are just as quick and easy as my normal routine. I'll report back next week with all the details.

p.s. If you'd like to do the challenge with us, let me know how it goes! (I need all the ideas I can get!)

Happy Fourth!

hot air balloons, battle creek michigan
Last year, Alan and I celebrated the Fourth of July at a friend of a friend's. They had an awesome house in Los Gatos with a sprawling backyard. I felt fancy drinking Lillet and lounging on an Eames chair (drool).  I remember pointing at the little house in the backyard and asking, "Who lives there?" The owner raised an eyebrow and said slowly, "No one. That's our guest house..." Ha! Totally blew my fancy cover.

This year we're just lollygagging about (my fave), and I'm catching up on blogs before we head over to our friends' BBQ. Hope you're all having a wonderful one, fancy or not! :)

(Photo captured by my friend Dianna as she drove through Battle Creek, Michigan this morning. So dreamy.)

Work-Week Wear: Giraffe Print

summer work outfit: silk tank and pencil skirt
mixing prints with solids
giraffe skirt
I've never been a big print person, but I'm starting to get more into them. I loved the giraffes on this pencil skirt and thought it'd be a fun pattern to wear in the office. I've found the key to wearing prints is to balance your other half with a solid color. (That is, unless you're feeling particularly bold. And if you are, more double-print power to you!)

(I'm wearing the Finnegan blouse from Aritzia, the Afternoon Safari pencil skirt from Anthropologie and Anthropologie heels. Thanks to my sister  Sophie for snapping these pics!)

Insta-Pockets for Working Out

hips-sister waist band
waist band for insta-pockets
A few weeks ago, I started running with some friends who are training for the Nike Women's Half Marathon. On our first run, no one knew what to do with their stuff, so everyone just held onto their car keys and phones. It was such a bummer trying not to drop/lose anything that even cheesy fanny packs started to look good. But then (!), we found these hipS-sister bands with hidden and zippered pockets that slip around your waist. You can instantly add pockets to whatever you're wearing—so convenient! I carry my inhaler, iPhone, kleenex and keys in mine. My friend Dianna is wearing a blue one in the picture above. Doesn't it just look like part of her outfit?
