I'm Still Here!

Hello friends, I'm sorry for the radio silence. Two weeks ago, Alan had a 14-hour surgery to remove a serious cancerous mass from his pelvis. It has been a crazy challenging time for us, but after 12 days in the hospital, Alan's finally on the road to recovery. Although the surgeons deemed the operation a success, we're still waiting with bated breath for the final report this week. We have no idea what the future holds, but we do know that there's a chance now he can live until we're both old and gray.

A few notes:

*Hospitals are scary. I imagine they're kind of like casinos when you're on a losing streak. You lose track of how long you've been there, you can't remember what it feels like to be outside and no one ever seems to sleep.
*The most vexing phrase ever muttered by a nurse: "What do you need now?"
*The most vexing phrase ever muttered by a doctor: "This isn't a hotel."

And to end on a positive one:

*We couldn't have made it this far without the love and support from our friends and family. It has been so amazing—thinking about it always makes me cry. I want to kiss them all. (You know who you are.)

Anyway, please forgive me for any inconsistent posting in the coming weeks. I have lots of post ideas stored in the notes app on my phone and am excited to share them.

p.s. Aren't these orchids beautiful? Some very lovely people sent them to us in the hospital. They're from Flowers by Ivy, my friend Jennifer's mom's flower shop :)

Surprise Apples

pink pearl apples
Pink Pearl apples look like regular apples on the outside, but inside, they're bright pink! They're in season for such a short time each year that I always get really excited when I see them. Aside from their amazing color, they're crisp and tart and are a good Granny Smith-substitute in baked goods. You can find them at farmer's markets and specialty grocery stores right now.

Silicon Valley Style Secrets: How to Wear Your Work Badge Like a Boss

alan wearing his work badge like a bosswork badge holder
Sometimes I'll look down at my work badge clipped boringly to my belt loop and think there has to be a more exciting way. Sure, you could crochet a pouch for your waist or craft a beaded lanyard necklace. Or you could wear it in a sheriff's badge holder. It automatically gives you an air of authority so people take you more seriously, and, if you're like Alan, will make your CEO ask where he can get one, too. All I'm saying is... think about it.

Floaty Silk Dress

black, white and green outfit
black and white color block dress
My fashion philosophy lately has been to buy classic, high-quality pieces that I won't get sick of wearing season after season. Floaty silk dresses, like this Aritzia Bisous dress, are one of those things. In neutral colors, they're timeless and perfect for accessorizing with pops of color. They can also be just as easily worn to work with a short cardigan as they can all by themselves for a dinner date.

Tip for Transporting Giant 36" Balloons

giant 36" balloon
giant blush balloon
When I brought this balloon into Party City to get filled with helium for our engagement photos, the girl behind the counter was less than impressed.

"Do you know how big this balloon is?" she said coolly, as if I couldn't possibly know.

(Um, I bought it. I'm pretty sure I would know.)

"Pretty big," I said with a grin.

""Cause some people think they know. But they don't know," she said with a head roll. "They can't even fit it in their car."

"Oh, pfft," I laughed, determined to prove her wrong. "It'll fit."

Fast forward five minutes later and...
