Army Jacket

Once in a long while, I'll find a wardrobe workhorse, like this lightweight army jacket, that I'll want to wear every day. It's been perfect for transitioning to cooler mornings and nights. A few of its wondrous properties include...

Leopard Print Loafers for Wide Feet

Every time I find cute wide shoes, I feel like I've hit the jackpot. (If you have wide feet, do you feel the same?) I just discovered Me Too loafers which fit perfectly right out of the box; seriously, they're so comfortable. They don't come in wide, specifically, but ordering them a half size bigger seems to do the trick. I'm so excited to wear them with jeans and dresses this fall.

p.s. the best suede wedges for wide feet and ballet flats for wide feet (I wear these almost every day).

Do You Have Bad Eating Habits?

You know when you're at a restaurant and they give you a choice between a side of fries or a side salad? I wish I was the person who picked the salad, but the hard truth is you could get me to go anywhere if you said there would be fries there (or potato chips... or fries and potato chips!) My sister's trying to get me to at least switch to sweet potato fries. But real fries are so much better! (It's a serious addiction). Anyway, it reminded me of the Anna Kendrick interview where she talks about her hilarious Taco Bell obsession.

Fall Trend: Two Ways to Wear Slouchy Pants

One trend I can't wait to wear this fall is the slouchy pant. And apparently I'm not the only one -- I just ordered these grey slouchy pants from Madewell and was surprised to find them backordered until mid-December! What I love about them is they're as comfy as your favorite sweats but can be easily dressed up. Here are two fun ways to wear them...

Outfit One
Wear slouchy pants to brunch with a white v-neck tee, a cool army jacket, blue suede wedges for a feminine touch and a sleek crossbody bag.

Outfit Two
Style slouchy pants for the office with a pretty silk blouse, leopard print loafers and a classic brown leather tote.

Going Vegan (For A Lunch)

In college, I gave up meat for a week "to see if I could do it" and ended up eating vegetarian for five years. I love eating everything now, but I still get a huge kick out of creative meatless dishes. So I was excited to have lunch with my cousins at The Veggie Grill, which serves plant-based American comfort food. Their menu includes cozy dishes like mac and cheese, cheeseburgers, crab cakes, fried chicken and carrot cake.

Since it was a hot day, we all ordered salads. They came out piled high, and we marveled at how meat-like the fake meat looked. I ordered the Savory Kale Caesar with grilled chickin', veggie Parmesan and—my favorite—crispy tempeh bacon. The kale was nice and tender and the tempeh was a fun substitute for bacon (which I eat way too much of). 
  
Nathalie ordered their popular All Hail Kale salad which was light and refreshing.

My favorite thing was the spicy Buffalo wings. I even liked them more than actual chicken wings! It'd be fun to bring them to a party to see if anyone noticed they weren't real meat.

It took some convincing to get Nathalie and Denise excited about going vegan for a lunch (ha!), but in the end, everyone agreed they'd come back again.

My First Ever Surprise Party

Have you ever had a surprise party? This weekend, I had my first! My sister Sophie and my mom picked me up and told me to keep my eyes closed. After we parked, they held my hands and guided me out of the car. Walking with my eyes closed felt so strange and exciting; I started feeling a little giddy. When I I opened my eyes, we were at the Rose Garden, and I was surprised to see my friends and family gathered around. It was so sweet!

I loved all the thoughtful little details, especially the theme: peach and scalloped edges. There was a scalloped backdrop and a table with snacks and sweets to munch on.

There was even a ceramic English bulldog! (Alan and I have wanted a real one for so long). We drank peach iced tea (another one of my favorites) out of vintage-y milk bottles and peach striped straws. (To my surprise, the bottles were re-purposed frappuccino bottles).

The cake was the prettiest one I've ever had! It had gold leaves, and Sophie added tall gold candles—so chic! I felt bad cutting into it, but it was my favorite banana cake, so getting to eat it made it okay.

End of Summer Recipe: Warm Roasted Peaches

To celebrate the end of summer, warm roasted peaches are just about perfect day or night. They're mellow and sweet with a kick of cinnamon spice. Here are my favorite ways to eat them:

*For breakfast, eat them over a bowl of cool yogurt. The fruit juices mix in, dressing up even the plainest yogurt.
*For a fresh lunch, slice them up and toss them in a spinach, walnut and parmesan cheese salad. Serve with butter and a baguette.
*For dessert, place half a peach on top of a warm shortbread biscuit with a big dollop of whipped cream.  

They're so delicious, I could eat them plain straight out of the oven. My sister Sophie shares her easy recipe below. Ready in just three steps and in less than 20 minutes, you'll have more time for warm evening strolls and general summer lounging.

Warm Brown Butter Roasted Peaches

Half the peaches and pit. Melt 2 tablespoons of margarine or butter then mix in 1 tablespoon brown sugar. Drizzle over peaches, sprinkle cinnamon, then bake for 15-18 minutes at 400 degrees.

Babies and Balloons

Yesterday, a few sweet friends and their babies stopped by to drop off some birthday goodies. When I opened the door, they burst into song and surprised me with a giant balloon and cupcakes. We couldn't help but snap a few pictures—babies next to oversized objects are irresistibly cute!

At first, Oliver was like "Why am I sitting here? And why does Charlie get to lay down?"

But after a while, he changed his mind, and they both decided it was pretty cool. *fist bump*

I'm 30 today! (How did that happen?) :) For my birthday, I'd love to share our engagement photos. It's been 11 years since Alan and I first met at a stranger's quinceanera and about eight years of dating. We've been through so much together, and he's still inspiring and motivating me every day. Alan, I love you!

Shoot details:
Photographer—We worked with our wonderful photographer friend Daniel, who runs Content magazine. He's so quirky and cheerful; we were laughing the entire time.

Location—We took most of the pictures at a place near and dear to our hearts at Quicksilver Park, a beautiful rustic spot we frequently hike, and had a little picnic at a nearby park. 

Wardrobe—The white dress I wore is the one I had made in Cambodia which I'd considered wearing as my wedding dress up until recently. The green dress is from Anthropologie. Alan's suit is from Zara. 

Props—The tassel is a DIY my friends helped me make (thanks, Lauren and Dianna!) It was supposed to be for the giant balloon (that got away), but we put it to good use anyway. The rad vintage picnic basket is borrowed from my friend PJ, event design extraordinaire of Going Lovely.

Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day is always bittersweet for me. It reminds me that summer's coming to an end, but the holidays and my birthday—I'm turning 29, 3 weeks and 8 days tomorrow ;)—are just around the corner. Do you have fun plans today? Alan and I started the day with a buttery, syrupy pancake breakfast. Have a relaxing holiday!
