In the months before Denise’s wedding, the word elaborate was redefined to include mention of her wedding details. Like the fact that her invitation arrived to guests in a box. A whole box. Filled with tissue paper, mini crystal beads, embossed paper, photographs and a certificate to receive a home sound system from Bose. (OK, it didn’t really include the Bose speakers, but it was still a lot of stuff.) One summer day, as we all congregated in her kitchen to proceed with the 9-step tissue paper folding Justin had invented to get it to fit inside the box just so, I thought about how crazy this all was. As the sweat dripped into my eyes, and Denise stood hovering behind us lashing us with her belt if we stopped or messed up, I wondered if I, too, would become so obsessed with my wedding when the day – some day, one day, not now, definitely not now and far, far into the future – came. Denise assured me that I would, that I could count on it. She said she never imagined all this for herself and that she had originally thought she would have a simple wedding. But then she signed up on theknot.com and then all bets were off. As I watched her absentmindedly twirl her multi-carat meteorite around on her finger, I couldn’t be sure if what she said was true.
You can’t see our fear here. We learned to hide it well. And to constantly look over our shoulders to preemptively try and avoid those lashings. All of a sudden, everyone is getting married or has secretly snuck off in the years between high school and now, while I wasn’t looking, and gotten hitched. And now I can’t help but notice the blogs and the magazines all devoted to that one special day. I don’t know what did it, but I started admiring people’s rings. We’d be at the hospital, signing Alan in to have his cancer removal surgery, and I’d notice the receptionist’s ring. At the grocery store, I would see a Ring Pop and wonder if it were a princess cut stone. So this is how it starts. Now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Although there is no wedding coming soon for a long time, I’ve decided on two things: 1) A lot of money will not be spent and 2) we definitely will not borrow money to fund a lavish event (no matter how much I want to have swans walking around like Annie had in her wedding in Father of the Bride). However, should by some unforeseeable turn of events I end up marrying Donald Trump or Bill Gates, I cannot promise my adherence to either of the conditions. And until that classy day when all my friends and family will be invited to the neighborhood park to witness our exchange of vows and, afterwards, to the Wal-Mart McDonald’s (which we will rent out completely – no holding back!) for our reception, I’m going to keep ooh-ing and aah-ing over all these beautiful rings. Joanna Goddard of the wonderful blog A Cup of Jo got her wedding ring from Blanca Monros Gomez. Seriously beautiful, beautiful jewelry. I kind of want it all and thought maybe if I called Blanca and told her that she could drive my Civic whenever she is in town, she might offer me some substantial discounts…
If anyone asks, I would like this one, please. It even has a rose gold setting! (I know, I’m making myself sick too. But it’s started and once it starts you can’t stop it. What can I say?)

lol…thats a pretty neat ring…and a pretty neat invite. haha
Very pretty ring!!!
Bookmarking that site for the future! Don't even have a boyfriend and I have a bunch of wedding stuff planned (hehe), but my plan is also to keep it simple…
About a year ago we received a wedding invite that arrived in a box. The invitation was, no lie, on a mini-scroll and gave the bride and groom's names as "Lady Jane Smith" and "Sir John Jones". It also included glitter, which pissed me off. Also, it was the guy's *third* wedding and he and the bride had had a spat and broken up in our front yard only a couple of months before we received the invite.
Sorry to hog your comments, but had to share. Don't include glitter! Also, love the rings! 🙂
Every time I see a beautiful wedding or hear about a nice one I get the feeling of wanting to get married xD
And me with 4 daughters…. *grumbles* 😀
seriously beautiful jewelry. i kept a photo of my engagement ring and eventually gave it to my future husband just as a "suggestion". smart man took the suggestion and ran with it. love your choice. gorgeous!
I like your conditions for your wedding plans. We have some just like that too. Some are: 'we must spend a lot of money' and 'we must look really awesome in the wedding'
You're right. This is how it starts. I'm already married, had my wedding, but every time people talk about plans for theirs, or I go to a wedding, I think…"Ooo…that's what I want."
Dude, you think you'll be able to do it for super-cheap and can't believe how much your friends spend. Then, your parents hand over a 200-person guest list and you are like WTF?? Believe me, it will cost A LOT not matter what you try because the little things you plan to save money don't really make a huge dent. It's feeding all those people that hurts the pocketbook. Btw – I watched Father of the Bride last weekend. It's one of my favorites!
Very pretty ring. I kind of think a simple wedding is better. You can remember more instead of stressing more. And, plus, you aren't paying it off for years to come. It is fun to dream, though. I don't know…makes sense to me.
Hi Patrick!I was so excited to see you had a blog, but there is nothing posted. You should get on that…
Katie, planning is good! When the day comes you will be so well prepared.
Kim, I don't believe in comment hogging so hog away! I'm curious if the Lady and the Sir are still married? hehe Also, I never thought about glitter before, but that does sound sort of nice, kinda like surprise! when people open it. But because of you I now know better. 😛
Kyrie, me too.
Rainysoul, hahaha. I'm not even sure, does that tradition still hold where the daughter's family pays for the wedding? If so, I am most definitely having it at the local Wal-Mart.
Cindy, you married a smart one who knows how to keep you happy!
Marshall, your first condition makes me want to be invited to your wedding and Amen to the second one.
That's so funny Katherine haha. I like looking at wedding ideas (ok I swear this just started recently! I'm not really crazy I promise!) even though I know there is no way I'm going to have all that.
Deanna, I know — I love that movie! It's so cute. Anyway, I think I could keep costs down if I make everyone order off the $1 menu.
2busy — I agree! Did you have a simple wedding?
I've never gotten an invite in a box– I did get one with feathers though.
It sounds like you are getting the wedding bug if you are noticing rings (that's how it started with me)… It took me a year and half to plan my "simple" wedding– the longer you have to plan the more crazed you will become– but (when the time comes) if you want to stick to a budget I'll lend you my sister and mother!
That's a beautiful ring! I think it'd look perfect on you.
I know what you mean about everyone getting married: I have this feeling, too. Even though I'm married we didn't have a ceremony. The idea of spending so much money on a lavish wedding was appalling; we could travel to so many nice places with that much money. But of course, deep down inside, I still wanted a wedding… So a wedding ceremony we'll have… a cheap one 😉
Wow. That's definitely a serious invite. I don't think I'd like to see the bride to be's expression if anyone declined to come.
My brother has asked me to help arrange his wedding. I was slightly concerned, however when they came round for dinner last month, they were still debating whether to have a church wedding or not. I think I'm safe for a while yet.
Wow, that is BEAUTIFUL! I'm going to the site as we speak […loading…got it!]. Her stuff is so unique and beautiful! Wow. My friends have been getting married since I was 19. That is 7 years ago!? Yikes dude! Y-I-K-E-S! I am with ya…I want it to be so affordable. I've never looked forward to it, personally. I HATE being the center of attention. Well, in big groups anyway. Sigh. I can already tell yours will be so elegant. =)
