Sometimes, after a hard week’s work, there is nothing you’d rather do than get up, pull on some shorts, and sit in the sun and eat donuts. And sometimes, so long as it’s not every day, I for one believe that we should listen to this yearning, put on those shorts and go get some donuts. I have found that the best way to quiet this desire is to find and consume the best possible donuts (and therefore the most satisfying). Now, people have brought me to fancy shmancy donut shops before, and while they were good, they weren’t great, and definitely no match for my favorite donut shop of all time: Stan’s Donuts in Santa Clara. I cannot think of a more un-fancy place than Stan’s, but the way they fry up their dough, it couldn’t matter less. In two words, their donuts are mind-blowing. The ones to order which will knock your socks off (they knock mine off all the time) are the plain glazed donuts. I know some of you may be thinking, “But what about the apple fritter? That one’s my favorite!” but I would advise you not to lose focus. Order the plain glazed and prepare yourself for the perfectly crisp exterior and deep, doughy interior which sometimes reminds me of the joy of falling into a soft, welcoming bed at the end of a long, tiring day.

Totally agree. My favorite donuts come from a shop called "The Donut Shop" in Inlet, NY. They have cinnamon and sugar or plain. That's it. They come in an unassuming white paper bag. And they are the best donuts I've tasted.
I order a dozen every time I visit the Adirondacks: no matter how many people I am with. Come to think of it … I should start bringing fewer guests …
They knock your socks off–well as long as they don't your shorts off!! ;P I live in the Bay Area now I will have to try Stan's, although I have noticed in Belmont alone there are several doughnut shops! I was just having this conversation with a friend who also relocated to the Bay Area recently… Bay people love 'em doughnuts!! av you ever had a SpudNut. Nothing fancy…promise. They are doughnuts made with potato flour so just a tinge less sweet–perfection to me. Oh and Might O vegan doughnuts in Seattle–soo yummy!
Dayum, I haven't had a donut in forever. I do think that the plain donuts tend to be the winners…I'm not one for all these weird fillings and sprinkles. I live a long way from CA, but hopefully I'll remember the name if I'm ever in the area!
I haven't had a donut in as long as I can remember! But when I visit my folks up north in Norway there is a girl selling donuts from a little van and she calls her shop 'Dutta's donuts'. So cute! 🙂 You can get them while they are so fresh they are still warm, and I want one now!!
Have a nice weekend 🙂
Signe, that sounds so lovely!
A.mae.zed — you must try them sometime! 🙂
It ain't like donuts ever look bad….
