The one thing you should never ask a woman

People always say that you should never ask a woman her age, but in my book, there's a question that's much, much worse: "Are you pregnant?" This weekend, a stranger who was helping me get dressed for Preethi's Indian wedding asked me. At first it took me by surprise and was kinda funny, but then it started getting really embarrassing when she kept asking me. I started wondering if maybe I was pregnant. But then, at the Western ceremony the next day, I started chatting with the harpist, who was setting up, when she asked me if I was the flower girl. I tried looking at the bright side—maybe I just looked like a youthful 10-year old after all—but then I started to worry that maybe I looked like a pregnant 10-year old, and I wasn't quite sure how to feel about that.

I feel like every woman gets asked at least once in her life when she's not even remotely pregnant, and it's always super awkward every time. Has it happened to you?

Yep - and I've told them that I'm not, just storing fuel for the winter!
Have never minded being asked my age though.

A pregnant 10 year old. I'm not sure how anyone would mistake you for being pregnant, but sometimes the cut of the clothes or flowing tops give that illusion.

I work with a lady that asks almost everyone she sees... the one day I wore an empire waisted outfit, she got me. Never wore the outfit again... Now that I'm pregnant, I wish I had it!
But my rule of thumb-- never ask, unless you see an arm hanging out!

Tonia, that's a great response :)

Emily, that made me laugh out loud. I'm making that my new rule of thumb, too.

I have never been asked but there is a lady at work who will casually mention that I've gained weight. I find it so rude. It is a culture thing with her I think but I think she should keep her opinions on my weight to herself.

It happened to me, by a not-so-skinny lady herself. Then when a woman at work was pregnant I was way too scared to ask... turns out she was but I am so glad I waited for the announcement!
